A drug driver was still over the limit when he got behind the wheel two days after eating cannabis in Amsterdam.

Aaron Tuck was returning from work abroad and had passed through the capital of the Netherlands, where he admitted to going to a cafe and using the Class B drug. However, “a few days later” once Back in the UK, he was stopped by police in his Mercedes C-class after he was seen “driving erratically” in Bedlington, a court heard.

A drug test later proved that the 21-year-old exceeded the limit for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a breakdown product of cannabis.

Tuck, of Keeble Court, Ashington, has now been banned from the roads for 12 months after pleading guilty to driving over the specified drug limit. He was also fined £300 and ordered to pay £40 costs and a victim fine surcharge of £34.

Niamh Reading, prosecuting at Northumberland South East Magistrates’ Court, said an officer was on mobile patrol in Bedlington around 10pm on November 8 last year. She added: “At this moment the officer’s attention is drawn to a black Mercedes being driven erratically – it was accelerating and then braking hard.

“The vehicle is stopped and the officer spoke to the accused. Due to the manner of driving, the officer performed a roadside drug procedure and it was positive for THC.”

The court heard Tuck denied his driving was erratic, insisting he braked for a junction on a small section of road. Defender Graham Crouth said Tuck had been in the armed forces until November last year and was returning from Kenya when he stopped off in Amsterdam on his way home.

Mr Crouth continued: “He admits he went to a cafe and used cannabis. He then returned to this country via Birmingham. He had been here for a few days when he was driving, but the cannabis was still in his system.”
