Autorickshaw driver wins Rs 25 crore prize

Anoop, a resident of Sreevaraham in the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, is the winner of the Thiruvonam bumper lottery of the state lottery department worth Rs 25 crore. His winning ticket – the number TJ- 750605 – appeared in the draw, which took place on Sunday afternoon.

An autorickshaw driver by profession, Anoop bought the lottery ticket for Rs 500 at Pazhavangadi on Saturday evening, a day before the draw. This is the highest ever state lottery win. Even if Anoop won the lottery worth Rs 25 crore, he would get around Rs 15.75 crore.

Speaking to the media, Anoop said he was undecided on what to do with the prize money as he did not expect luck to favor him. The autorickshaw driver said he took Rs 50 from his son’s piggy bank to buy the ticket at the last minute.

While Rs 2.5 crore will be given to the agent who sold the winning ticket to Anoop, the rest will be deducted as tax. Thanks to Anoop, one more person will become a millionaire. The ticket was sold at the Pazhavangadi branch of the Bhagwati lottery agency.

Meanwhile, a ticket sold at Kottayam won the second prize of Rs 5 crore. The winning ticket – TG 270912 – was sold by a trader named Pappachan, who had bought and sold ten tickets from another ticket agency.

Terms and conditions for the lottery

* As soon as the ticket is purchased, you must put your name, signature and address on the back of the ticket.

* A ten percent commission on the cash price of 1st through 4th prize tickets and consolation prize tickets will be paid by the agency to the person who sold said tickets. Ten percent of the prize money for 5th through 8th prize tickets will be donated from the government fund as a gift to the agent who sold said ticket.

*Tickets qualifying for the prize must be presented within 30 days of the date of the drawing qualifying for the prize. First to third prize winners can claim the prize by presenting the tickets in person or through nationalized/scheduled banks with the necessary documents at the lottery office. The prize money can be claimed by presenting the prize tickets up to Rs 1 lakh at the local lottery offices.

* Authenticated copy of the winning ticket with signature and address of the prize winner. Two passport-sized photographs attested by an official officer, PAN card, self-attested copy of photo ID and Aadhaar card proving address on ticket, receipt with signature, name, address, Prize winner’s telephone number and a rupee stamp, bank account number, prize winner’s IFC code and a certified copy of the booklet must be produced with the ticket.

* The prize will be rejected for falsified or damaged tickets. Only one prize is authorized for the highest number obtained per ticket. Statutory income tax and related taxes will be deducted from the prize money.

* Prizes up to Rs 5,000 can be redeemed for cash at any lottery booth in the state.
