John Wailman, 76, was stunned when he received a message on his mobile phone telling him he had won the life-changing sum and was planning to buy a new house and go on vacation to celebrate
An OAP who won £1m in the National Lottery found out about his massive win via an app notification before bursting into tears.
John Wallman, 76, was amazed at the morning notification on his mobile phone after playing EuroMillions through the National Lottery app.
The retired construction manager, who now spends his free time entertaining the public and raising money for charity as part of a barbershop choir, is planning a new home and vacation getaway for to celebrate.
He won the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker special draw on March 25.
John, who is from Cornwall but now lives in Falkirk, said: “I woke up in the wee hours of Saturday morning and turned on my phone.
“A notification came from the National Lottery app, but I didn’t think about it until I sat down to breakfast later in the morning.
“I read the notification and it said I had won £1,000,000 but I didn’t really believe it.
“I called the National Lottery Line and even when I heard those words – ‘congratulations, you’re a winner’ – I just couldn’t figure it out.
“My wife came downstairs and when she saw me in tears on the phone she thought I had been scammed or something bad had happened.
“I have played the National Lottery since its inception and normally buy Lucky Dips through the National Lottery app, but I also had another ticket which I bought on a whim.
“I walked into the store going to tell some family members about my win and won another five bucks.”
John’s great love is singing and he is part of Sweet Harmony Barbershop Chorus, a local band that regularly plays his vocal chords to raise money for charity.
“I find singing so liberating and I love performing with Sweet Harmony.
“We play for all kinds of local bands and at events.
“All we ask for is a donation, and then at the end of each year, whatever we’ve raised is split between six designated charities.”
Now that the news is starting to fall, the first thing on John’s to-do list is to book a vacation in the sun.
“It’s been a roller coaster ride and I get emotional every time I talk about winning, so I haven’t really had a chance to think about what I’m going to do with the money.
“Booking a vacation, maybe a cruise, is definitely the first thing to do so we can relax and make plans.
“A new home is also on the cards. In fact, that’s how I broke the news to my daughter-in-law.
“I told her we decided to move out. Oh and by the way I won the lottery too! She didn’t believe me for a long time.”
